£150 Council Tax energy rebate

Keep your details safe: the council will not phone or email you to ask for your bank details to pay the £150 Council Tax energy rebate grant. Please watch out for scammers and protect your bank details.

The government has recently announced the Council tax rebate scheme to help households with rising energy bills.

If you are in Council Tax bands A to D, we will pay you a £150 rebate to help with your energy bills.

Check your Council Tax band

To qualify for the rebate the property must be:

  • In Council Tax band A to D on 1 April 2022
  • Your sole or main residence where you are liable for the Council Tax bill

Only one payment is available for each Council Tax property.

The £150 payment will not need to be repaid and won’t affect Council Tax Support entitlement or other income related benefits.

You can't apply if your property is:

  • a second home
  • empty
  • liable for business rates (NNDR)

How to get the rebate

If you pay your Council Tax by direct debit - you don’t need to apply. Please continue to check your bank account for the £150 Council rebate.

We need to carry out eligibility checks before each payment is made and are continuing to work through these.

If you don’t pay your Council Tax by direct debit, please complete one of the two forms below.  You will need to create a new account on our grant approval system:

Paid directly to your bank account - Bank account payment form

Credit to your council tax account - Council Tax account credit form

Please note we will NOT contact people and ask for bank account details by phone or email so please be alert to the risk of scam emails and calls.

Discretionary Council Tax Rebate Scheme

There will be some further funding available to help households who do not qualify under the main scheme.

We will be implementing a discretionary scheme as soon as possible, once we have more information about this, we will publish details here.

Notice from the Valuation Office Agency (VOA)

Following the Chancellor’s announcement on 3 February 2022 regarding support for energy bills, the VOA have received an increased number of requests on how to check and review a dwelling’s banding.

If any resident wants to request a review of their council tax band, they will need to explain why they believe their band is incorrect and provide supporting evidence. The VOA has issued guidance for further information.

Additional support with energy bills

Further support will be available to help with household energy bills directly from energy companies.

The energy bills rebate will provide households with an upfront discount on their bills worth £200.

Energy suppliers will apply the discount to domestic electricity customers from October, with the Government meeting the costs.

The discount will then be automatically recovered from people’s bills in equal £40 instalments over the next five years. This will begin from 2023, when global wholesale gas prices are expected to come down.
