Using our website and finding your way around the site

On the left hand side of every page is a yellow menu. This lists the section you are currently in, and the categories within that section. These categories are used to organise the great variety of detailed information available in our site.

To assist you with moving back and forth between the pages there is what is called a "bread crumb trail" at the top of each page - just under the text ‘Watford Borough Council’. For example, if you were in the page where our Councillors are listed, you would see the following:

‘You are in > Home > Council, government and democracy > Councillors’.

This represents the path from the home page to the page you are currently looking at. You can use it to revisit previous pages, or you may prefer to use your web browser's back button.

The information in the site is divided up into the following main sections:

Business
Community and living
Council, government and democracy
Education and learning
Environment
Health and social care
Housing
Jobs and careers
Legal services
Leisure and culture
Policing and public safety
Social issues
Transport and streets

How do I find information on the website?

There are four main ways that you can find information on this web site:

1. The home page
This is the starting point of any website and a good place to begin browsing the site for information. The web address of Watford Borough Council is www.watford.gov.uk. Accessing this web address will always bring you to our home page. NB - the 'web address' is often referred to as a URL - this is an abbreviation of Uniform Resource Locator, but 'web address' amounts to the same thing!

If you want to return to the homepage from any other page on the site, it is always just one step away – via the word 'Home' in the yellow menu or the Watford Borough Council ‘Audentior’ logo in the top left hand corner of the screen.

2. Search
On every page, you’ll see a search box at the top right-hand of the screen – titled ‘Quick search’. Type your own word(s) in the box, then using the 'search' button, links will appear on the screen for every instance those words are found.

3. A - Z
The A-Z is another method for finding information on the site. It lists all the information relating to Watford Borough Council, or available within the Borough, in alphabetical order. There’s a link for each letter of the alphabet, which will take you to a list of services for that letter. So for example, if you want to look for information on ‘jobs’ use the ‘j’ link.

4. Site map
A site map gives an overview of all the main areas of a website. Our site map, which is always up to date, can be located by following the link 'Site Map' which appears at the top of every page, just under the search box at the top right hand corner
