Licence - lottery

A lottery is the distribution of prizes by lot or chance where there is no degree of skill involved, and the chance of winning is secured by a payment. If a prize is awarded for skill alone then the scheme is not a lottery.

Societies wishing to conduct lotteries to raise money for charitable, sports and other similar purposes that are not for personal gain are required to be licensed by the Gambling Act 2005.

The society on whose behalf the lottery is promoted must first be registered with the appropriate authority, which is us as the local authority.

The application form for a lottery licence, and some advice on lotteries and the law which has been published by the Gambling Commission, can be found in the 'related pages' panel on this page.
