Licence - lottery

A lottery is the distribution of prizes by lot or chance where there is no degree of skill involved, and the chance of winning is secured by a payment. If a prize is awarded for skill alone then the scheme is not a lottery.

Section 5 of the Lotteries and Amusements Act 1976 (as amended by the National Lottery etc Act 1993) authorises the conduct of small lotteries (eg sweepstakes or draws) by societies for raising money for charitable, sports and other similar purposes that are not for personal gain.

The society on whose behalf the lottery is promoted must first be registered for the purposes of Section 5 with the appropriate authority, and the lottery must be conducted in a manner complying with the Act.
