Household waste - disposal sites

There are two Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs) in Watford, run by Herts County Council.

Household recycling

They accept a wide range of materials for recycling; are for household waste only and are open every day except Christmas day, Boxing day and New Year's day.

Watford Household Waste Recycling Centre, Wiggenhall Road, Watford, WD18 0FB
Open: Monday to Friday, 8am to 4pm; Saturday and Sunday 9am to 4pm

From the town centre ring road exit left onto Vicarage Rd then left again into Wiggenhall Rd. HWRC is on the left just after the river bridge.

You can recycle the following items at this centre:

Waterdale Household Waste Recycling Centre, St. Albans Road, nr. Garston, WD25 0PR
Open: Daily, 8am to 6pm

From the M1 Junction 6, take the A405 (St Albans Road) southbound. Keep to the left of the A405, and take the first exit after the M1 bridge (the HWRC is signposted).  You can recycle all the items as listed above for Watford, as well as the following:

  • CDs
  • Plastic (rigid)

Both sites now sell bags of 100% recycled soil improver made from garden waste collected from the household waste recycling centres in Hertfordshire. Each bag is 40 litres in size and costs £2.90. Please ask the site operator for assistance.

Please note that if either site is closed during its advertised opening hours, it is most likely to be due to the servicing of a full container, which should take no longer than 20 minutes.
