Housing associations and co-ops

Housing associations work to provide affordable homes for local people.

They are non-profit making organisations which provide accommodation, generally for rent. A housing co-operative is a group of people who jointly own, manage and control their homes. The properties belong to the co-op as a whole. Co-op members do not own their individual homes, but are tenants and pay rent to the co-op.

Some housing associations and co-ops cater for one particular client group (such as disabled people or older people) while others house people (including able-bodied and disabled) on an integrated basis.

Hertfordshire County Council’s website has links to a wide range of local housing associations and co-ops .
