Council tax benefit - new claim
Council tax benefit is a means tested benefit. This means when we work out your benefit, we take into account things like your income, savings and investments.
You can claim council tax benefit if you are on Income Support , Job Seekers Allowance or if you are on a low income (this includes people who are self employed).
You cannot claim Council Tax benefit if you or your partner have more than £16,000 in savings either individually or combined, unless you are in receipt of guaranteed pension credits.
Second adult rebate
You can claim second adult rebate if there are other people living in your home who are on a low income.
You cannot claim second adult rebate if you are married or have a partner, please contact the Revenues and Benefits department for more information. Contact details can be found at the bottom of this page.
How do I claim?
If you claim Income Support or Job Seekers Allowance, the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) will give you a form for you to claim Council Tax benefit as well. You should fill in the form and send it back to the DWP straight away. They will then send the form to us, with proof of your Income Support/ Job Seeker Allowance (income based) claim.
You can also claim Council Tax benefit if you are on a low income. To do this, you need to fill in the 'benefits claim form', this can be obtained by contacting us using the details below. Alternatively you can download the form by clicking on the link below.
