Mobile meals - meals on wheels

Watford Borough Council subsidises meals on wheels for Watford residents, which are delivered by Hertfordshire Community Meals.

Any Watford resident who wishes to receive meals on wheels should contact Hertfordshire County Council’s Customer Service Centre on tel: 01923 471400 and ask for the Meals on Wheels service.

Anyone who is unable to provide meals for themselves is eligible to receive meals on wheels. The price per meal is £3.25 – this includes a main meal and a pudding. It includes both hot and frozen options.

There is a menu of five main meal options a day, two of which are suitable for vegetarians. There is a choice of three desserts a day on the menu - a hot dessert, cold dessert or fresh fruit.

Asian vegetarian, Asian Halal, Kosher and Afro-Caribbean diets are catered for, as are gluten free, diabetic, texture modified (pureed), low salt and low fat.

Hot meals are delivered, at lunchtime, 5 days a week (Monday to Friday) to the customer’s home by a regular driver, although sometimes a replacement driver will be used. Weekend meals are available as frozen meals and are delivered each Friday.

Frozen meals can also be provided as a bulk delivery to the customers’ home. These are delivered every two weeks and stored in the customer’s own freezer. The minimum order is 12 main meals and 12 desserts. A table top freezer will be provided if the customer’s own freezer is not big enough to store the food. A steamer or microwave will also be provided, if required, to help with preparing the meals.

The meals are supplied by Hertfordshire Community Meals, a social not-for-profit enterprise who deliver meals across the county, supported by Herts County Council. Payment is collected in arrears, on a monthly basis either by cheque, postal order, telephone payments by debit/credit card or direct debit.
