Food

One of the main roles of the Environmental Health Section is to make sure that the food we eat is safe. We do this by carrying out proactive food hygiene inspections of all the food businesses in Watford, carrying out food sampling and investigating complaints about food and premises.

Whilst we look at food safety and hygiene, our colleagues from Trading Standards  (part of Hertfordshire County Council) look at food labelling and food quality issues.

Enforcement is carried out using a number of pieces of domestic and European legislation. We also give guidance and advice, often using the Food Standard Agency's 'Safer Food, Better Business' pack to help us. The Council also offers food hygiene training courses approximately six times per year.

Watford Borough Council operates a Scores on the Doors scheme which gives food businesses a food hygiene star rating from zero to five stars following inspection, so that customers can see how safe and clean businesses are.
