The Council is committed to providing top quality park and open space maintenance and management and has identified this in the Green Spaces Strategy, Cultural Strategy and Community Plan.

There are around 40 areas of parkland and open space under Watford Borough Council’s control.

The largest parks, Cassiobury and Garston Parks, contain attractive formal areas designed along traditional lines, whilst Harebreaks Wood and Alban wood provide a more natural environment to encourage wildlife.

The rivers Colne and Gade run through Oxhey Park and Cassiobury Park.  There are watercress beds, wildlife areas and wooded areas, plus lots of space for children to run around.  We also look after Whippendell Wood.

Events and Entertainment

Several events take place in the parks throughout the year including summer funfairs, firework displays, circuses, community and charitable events.

The parks and open spaces are available to hire for a number of activities. For information on holding an event in one of Watford's parks, please click here.

Nature Conservation

Green open spaces are vital to the community, sepecially in a built-up town like Watford.  Watford’s parks and open spaces are wildlife havens and are ideal for healthy exercise and community interaction. They also make a major contribution to the image, identity and status of our Borough.

The Council is committed to Nature Conservation and Biodiversity; for more information click here.

Sports facilities

There are plenty of sports facilities available within the parks including:

  • tennis courts (hard and grass)
  • football and cricket pitches
  • rugby pitches
  • bowls rinks
  • hurling
  • croquet

For more information on booking pitches or courts, or to find out about playing bowls or croquet, please contact Community Services on 01923 278333.

Children's playgrounds

Most of the parks and open spaces have children’s playgrounds. All of these are fenced off from dogs and have safety surfacing beneath the equipment. Cassiobury Park also has a paddling pool complex and children’s putting golf course, a miniature railway and a bouncy castle.
