Parks and open spaces - information and advice
The Council is committed to providing top quality park and open space maintenance and management and has identified this in the Green Spaces Strategy, Cultural Strategy and Community Plan.
There are around 40 areas of parkland and open space under Watford Borough Council’s control.
The largest parks, Cassiobury and Garston contain attractive formal areas designed along traditional lines whilst Harebreaks Wood and Alban wood provide a more natural environment to encourage wildlife.
The rivers Colne and Gade run through Oxhey and Cassiobury Park, and we also look after Whippendell Woods. There are watercress beds, wildlife areas and wooded areas, plus lots of space for children to run around.
Events and Entertainment
Several events take place in the parks throughout the year including summer funfairs, firework displays, circuses, community and charitable events.
The parks and open spaces are available to hire for a number of activities. For hiring information please see the Parks for Hire form in the 'related pages' section.
Nature Conservation
Green open spaces are an essential "quality of life" resource and a vital component of a balanced urban environment. Watford’s parks and open spaces are wildlife havens and act as a focal point for healthy exercise and community interaction. They also make a key contribution to the image, identity and status of our Borough.
The Council is committed to Nature Conservation and Biodiversity, for more information see the 'related pages' on this page.Sports facilities
There are plenty of sports facilities available within the parks including:
- tennis courts (hard and grass)
- football and cricket pitches
- rugby pitches
- bowls rinks
- hurling
- croquet
Children's playgrounds
Most of the parks and open spaces have children’s playgrounds. All of these are fenced off from dogs and have safety surfacing beneath the equipment. Cassiobury Park also has a paddling pool complex and children’s putting golf course, a miniature railway and a bouncy castle.
For details of our playgrounds see the 'related pages' section of this page.
