Marine and waterway servicesBritish Waterways is the organisation responsible for maintaining 2,200 miles (3,540km) of this inland waterway network today so that people can use it for a wide range of leisure activities. The trunk route of Britain's canal network, the picturesque Grand Union links London through the Chilterns with Birmingham via the longest single canal in Britain. Its main line connects the two largest cities in England, London and Birmingham and stretches for 217 km (135 miles) and has 160 locks. It has arms to places including Leicester, Slough, Aylesbury, Wendover and Northampton. From Rickmansworth, the canal follows the valley of the River Gade, a tributary of the Colne. After passing the site of Croxley paper mill, the canal skirts Watford through Cassiobury Park, passes under the M25 motorway and approaches Kings Langley. The canal here passes the site of the former Ovaltine factory, which was once supplied with raw materials by canal. For detailed information about individual waterways, news, events, places to eat and drink, dynamic mapping, holidays and things to do on and around the waterways, please follow the link in the Related Items panel to the Waterscape website. Ther is also a link to the British Waterways site, which contains information about the management and development of the waterways. |
