forest and woodland management

Whippendell Wood is managed by Watford Borough Council’s Arboricultural Officer. Harebreaks Wood and Albans Wood come under the management of the Council's Conservation Officer.

All three areas of woodland are classed as ancient, semi-natural woodland, which means that they have been wooded for hundreds of years.  The woods would have been used to provide firewood, building materials and possibly food for animals over the centuries.

We have management plans for Whippendell Wood, Harebreaks Wood and Albans Wood, and the main aim of the management plans is to conserve and improve these areas.  For example, fallen or dead trees are left in place to provide homes for insects and animals, and also to encourage rare plants and fungi.
