Animal welfare
Some of the work that the Environmental Health Section does is closely linked to animal welfare.
The RSPCA are the main organisation that deals with animal cruelty. Follow this link to their website: Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals or call 0300 1234 999.
The Animal Welfare Act 2006 give local authorities powers to deal with animal welfare in certain circumstances. Here in Watford we have good links with the local RSPCA Inspectors and work with them on some cases.
Other work carried out by Environmental Health includes:
- Investigating barking dog complaints
- Investigating reports of dangerous dogs or prohibited breeds.
- Dealing with stray dogs.
In all of these areas of work, when we believe there is an animal welfare issue we can involve a vet or the RSPCA.
We are also responsible for issuing licences for the following types of business:
- Pet shops
- Catteries
- Dog boarding establishments
- Dog breeding establishments
