Elections - electoral nominations

The Council provides information on the process of electoral nominations, and publishes a list of nominations for local elections.

Watford is divided into 12 wards and there are three Councillors in each ward, which makes a total of 36 Councillors.

There are local elections usually held on the first Thursday in May in three out of four years.  Generally, one Councillor from each ward is elected each year.  Elections to the County Council are held in the fourth year.  A Councillor usually serves a four year term before standing for re-election.

A person may stand as a candidate at local elections if he or she is a British citizen, British Commonwealth citizen or a citizen of the Republic of Ireland or another European Union State and will be 18 years old by the day they submit their nomination form and

  • is registered as a local government elector in the Watford register of electors, both on the day they are nominated and election day; or
  • has either occupied a property as owner or tenant in the Borough for at least twelve months prior to nomination; or
  • his or her principle or only place of work during the twelve months preceding nomination day has been in the Borough; or
  • he or she has resided in the Borough during the whole of the twelve months prior to nomination.

10 electors who are registered to vote in the relevant ward of the Borough or Electoral Division of the County (as appropriate) must sign the nomination paper.
