Out of the Council’s share of your council tax, it spends approximately £1 million per year supporting voluntary and community groups across Watford.
These ‘pump priming’ funds enable our local groups to attract a lot more money into the borough from companies, the National Lottery, central government and charitable trusts set up to support local charities and groups.
The council makes sure your money is spent for the benefit of Watford residents by closely monitoring charitable funding. Mayor Dorothy Thornhill said: “We believe that in this way we can balance a superior service to residents whilst remaining an efficient, effective, value for money council.”
Watford & Three Rivers Trust (formerly known as Watford CVS) is an umbrella organisation for charities based in Watford. It plays a central role in supporting over 160 locally-based voluntary and community groups and as such receives a number of grants from the Council.
The CVS provides an essential link for local people wanting to know more about local groups – whether they want to give help or ask for help. The team at Watford CVS matches people wanting to volunteer, with local organisations and groups needing help, including the five organisations detailed above. Current vacancies range from modelling clothes at a fashion show for the retired, to providing a treasurers’ position.
Volunteering literature is available in Urdu, Gujarati and Punjabi supporting the many ethnic groups in and around Watford.
You can visit their website, or call them on tel: 01923 216950 or drop in between 10am and 4pm at their offices at Holywell Community Centre, Chaffinch Lane, Tolpits Lane, Watford WD18 9QD.
