Infectious diseases

The Environmental Health Section investigates cases of suspected and confirmed infectious diseases, particularly food poisoning. These are usually cases of salmonella or camplyobacter but can also include cases of E.Coli, Typhoid and Tuberculosis.

Infectious diseases

Some diseases are 'notifiable' which means that doctors are required to let the local authority know when they confirm a case, so that an investigation can be carried out. Whilst we find out about most infectious disease cases this way, sometimes we are contacted directly by the person that has been ill.

The investigation, initially undertaken by the Environmental Health Duty Officer, has two aims:

1. To identify the source of the problem
2. To minimise any further spread

When carrying out our investigation, we pay careful attention to anyone to anyone in a vulnerable group, as well as anyone working in the the food industry.
