Crime - prevention
Here are a few basic tips with links to more detailed advice.
For your home. The number of domestic burglaries in Watford is low but you can lower the risk even more -
- always secure your home by locking doors and windows
- use door chains and spyholes to beat bogus callers
- if you go away, use timers on lights and a radio to give the impression someone is at home
- don't leave keys by the letterbox or cat flap, and don't hide spares outside
- think about the security outside - upgrading locks on sheds, garages and gates and repair any gaps to fences. Consider installing visible burglar alarms and external lighting
- if you are moving home, try not to give too many details of your daily routine and security arrangements to prospective buyers
For you and your belongings. Think about your personal safety and keeping your possessions safe -
- mark belongings such as computers or mobile phones with your postcode.
- make sure zips and fastenings on bags and rucksacks are closed and facing inwards. If your bag has a long strap, wear it across your body, not just over one shoulder
- keep your purse, wallet, mobile or i-pod in a front pocket
For your vehicle. Minimise risk and inconvenience of vehicle crime -
- always remove tools from unattended vans and cars
- use immobilisers, alarms, steering ot gear locks
- secure number plates with non-reversible fixing screws
For your bicycle. Make your bike less appealing to someone else -
- keep a log of your bike details. Save the frame number on your mobile.
- get the frame marked with your postcode - phone 01923 472030 for more details
