Business rates

Business rates or National Non Domestic Rates (NNDR) are a national tax collected from all occupiers or owners of non-domestic property.

The annual business rates bills cover the period from 1 April to 31 March.

The annual bills are posted out in March, and the bills are payable in ten monthly instalments from April to January.

These rates are set by the government and collected by local councils. The income is then paid into a national 'central pool'.  The government redistributes this income to the billing authorities and other statutory service providers, such as Hertfordshire Police.

This is how local businesses contribute to the cost of local services.

In this section you can find out about business rate reductions - also known as 'rate relief'.
