Morrisons announces new store opening in Watford

Release Date: 18 June 2013

Morrisons announced today (18 June) it has begun construction at Ascot Road and expects its new ‘Fresh Format’ store to begin trading this winter.

Mayor at Morrisons

The announcement comes just days after Morrisons was recognised as ‘Employer of the Year’ at last week’s Industry Awards organised by The Grocer Magazine – the fourth year in a row that Morrisons has won the award.

The new Watford store will create around 300 full and part time jobs for local people, providing training for all with opportunities to progress onto skilled apprenticeship. Morrisons has more skilled butchers, bakers and fishmongers making and preparing food in its stores than any other retailer and will begin recruitment in summer 2013.

Morrisons would like to employ as many local people as possible and typically the majority of staff will live in a three mile radius of the store. The positions will also be advertised through Job Centre Plus to maximise recruitment of the long term unemployed.

Dorothy Thornhill MBE, Elected Mayor of Watford, said: “I am delighted to welcome Morrisons to Watford. It is great that an industrial site is being put to such good use – when I visited last week I was stunned by how much it really opens up this end of town. From talking to local people, it is clear they are fully supportive of the plans – like me, they welcome the new job opportunities and the fact that they will have a supermarket on their doorstep. I am really looking forward to the next phase, which includes a much needed new primary school.”

Richard Haynes, development executive at Morrisons, said: “During our consultation we received some very positive feedback about regenerating Ascot Road and opening a new store in Watford. We are looking forward to opening this winter and are delighted to be in a position to offer around 300 jobs with specialist training opportunities in the store to local people.”
