Don't get caught out - make sure you are on the electoral register

Release Date: 7 September 2010

Residents in Watford are being urged to safeguard their vote at election time by registering with Watford Borough Council.

The request comes at the start of the annual canvass, when all local councils in the country deliver electoral registration forms to all households. To vote in an election, eligible electors must be on the electoral role.

All households in Watford will have received an annual canvass form from the council. It lists all the people currently on the electoral register for the address. Electors are asked to simply add anyone who should be registered and isn’t on the list and cross out anyone who no longer lives at the address. The form should be signed and returned to the council as soon as possible.

Watford Borough Council Elections Manager, Gordon Amos said: “Registering to vote is simple. Either complete the form that has come through your door by returning in the post, by SMS text message, Freephone telephone or online. See the form received for full details, or contact us if you have not received one. Alternatively you can visit the website: www.aboutmyvote.co.uk to get all you need – a downloadable registration form and our contact details. Once you have filled in the form, make sure you send it to us as soon as possible to secure your vote.”

Registering to vote is quick and easy. It is the only way of making sure you have a vote at election time – you are not automatically registered if you pay council tax or if you have registered previously.
