I am having difficulty paying the rent/council tax on my home. Can the council help?
We may be able to help you, though this depends on a number of factors:
- For assistance with council tax benefit you need to be the liable person
- For rent allowance on a housing association property, mobile home, hostel or bed and breakfast, it is your responsibility to make sure it is suitable accommodation.
- If you rent from a private landlord you should check with the council what level of Local Housing Allowance you would be allowed for your circumstances.
Once you have done this you will then need to apply for housing/council tax benefit, by completing a claim form and supplying all the information required. We can then assess your claim and advise you whether we can help.
A comprehensive guide to housing benefit and council tax benefit can be found on the relevant page of the council's website.
