N.B.  In 2010, there was a change to the definition of working age population to include both males and females aged 16-64 (adding females aged 60-64).  The proportions are a percentage of the resident population so this means that the total claimant count proportions will have been adjusted downwards;this has also been applied retrospectively to historic data.  Claimant count rates from 2012 onwards are calculated using the mid-2012 resident population aged 16-64.

N.B. Claimant count rates from 2012 onwards are calculated using the mid-2012 resident population aged 16-64.

These summaries of claimant count show how numbers increased markedly between 2008 and 2009, how they have varied over time and how there has been a noticeable decrease between 2012 and 2013.  The July 2013 rate of 2.8% in Watford is similar to the East of England (2.7%), higher than Hertfordshire (2.2%), and lower than the national rate of 3.4%.
