Permitted development
Some building works to single dwellings do not need planning permission. This is known as permitted development
Below is a list of common householder projects. Select each one for a link to the Planning Portal:
- Extensions
- Conservatories
- Porches
- Loft conversion
- Garage conversion
- Patios and driveways
- Windows
- Outbuildings
For a full list, see the Planning Portal's list of Common Projects.
You can also view the Interactive House Guides - there is one for semi-detached properties and one for terraced houses, flats, shops and basements. These are simple visual tools to help you see if you need planning permission.
Restrictions
Some permitted development rights may have been restricted or taken away by conditions attached to the original planning permission. This could be to safeguard the appearance of an area or to protect neighbours from extensions where there is limited garden space.
You can find out if your house has had its permitted developments rights removed by contacting the planning support team on tel: 01923 278293 or using the email address at the bottom of the page.
