Why refurbish Watford Colosseum?
The Colosseum is very much a public performance facility of its time. Whilst the hall itself is well proportioned and has a fine acoustic, the supporting facilities for the public are very modest.
Contemporary audiences have different expectations, requiring additional public space and a far greater number of WCs for example. The current provision of toilets is well below the statutory minimum.
The building also needs to be brought up to date with regard to current legislative needs for accessible facilities for artists and performers. There is also the need, wherever practicable, to make the building physically accessible for the wider range of users – currently, there is no lift access to the upper seating level or floors.
The alterations are all focused on improving the audience enjoyment of performances, and enhancing flexibility of the programme.
